The room was filled with politicians and preachers as the Louisiana Family Forum began its annual political awards banquet. Now back-in-the-day the often repeated mantra concerning politicians and preachers was “You never discuss politics or religion in public!” So the room should have been graveyard quiet. But it wasn’t. The buzz of conversation was so loud the master of ceremonies had to boom out a big “MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!” to start the program.
Now why put the people of God in the same room with the elected servants of the people? The answer is simple yet profound. It’s because, contrary to popular beliefs, not all politicians are evil. As the evening progressed it became clear that a host of Louisiana’s electorate are on the same moral page as the preachers who were in attendance.
The paramount part of the evening was when State Senators and Representatives were called to the stage to be handed their awards. The basis for each to be recognized was not any headline grabbing legislation they passed. It was based on their voting and actions in the 2015 legislative session for the families of Louisiana.
The host for the night Gene Mills, President of Louisiana Family Forum, has set a high bar for legislators to meet on issues of life, family, marriage and children. Each recipient excelled in those areas as they wrote, introduced, lobbied-for and voted for family legislation. Not all bills were successful but every one knew they valiantly fought for the families of Louisiana.
Gene Mills, as the keynote speaker, poured out his heart and spirit as he challenged each of us to brace ourselves for the onslaught of attacks against traditional biblical family values that we would face in Louisiana and America. He pulled back the politically correct veil to reveal the ugly face of evil that has set the family in its hateful sights. He admonished us to work, pray and gather together to save our fair state for future generations.
The evening ended with the words of the Apostle Paul to strengthen each of us. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7) Yes, politicians and preachers can and must work together for our common faith.
