The Bible tells us that children are a reward from God (Psalm 127:3). It would certainly seem fitting, then, that we heed Solomon’s wise counsel to train them appropriately. In fact, the value that God placed on teaching our children the truth is clearly addressed by Moses who stressed to his people the importance of teaching their children about the Lord and His commands and laws: “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:7-9).

Parents should have zeal for teaching their children just like Moses did. Parents have been given the privilege of being stewards of their children’s lives for a very short time, but the teaching and training they provide is eternal. According to the promise of Proverbs, a child who is diligently trained in the “way he should go” will remain true to that way in this life and reap its rewards in the next.

Our annual TOYS rally is totally about that. It is our goal to reach out to our youth (3rd - 6th grade) and teach them about how to become a Christian and how to live the Christian life. This event takes place every 2nd Saturday in May. It is held at the Tuscumbia Church of Christ. We spend three hours in singing, scripture reading, prayer and mini-sermons to help us understand about the Christian walk. We also have a craft and lunch. Following the event, we go to Spring Park for a fun-filled adventure.

Below, you will discover two wonderful books geared towards children about baptism and the Christian life. These books were written by Kyle Butt of Aplogetics Press. Our lessons are based on these two books. Please take the time to read about each one.

Am I Ready to be Baptized?

The dream of every Christian parent is to one day see his or her child mature to the point of becoming a Christian. Training up a child in the way he should go certainly is no easy task. In fact, it ranks among the most difficult missions this side of eternity. One of the most challenging aspects of this job is knowing when your child is ready to take responsibility for his or her soul by being baptized and becoming a Christian.

As a concerned parent, you probably have been over the scenarios in your mind a hundred times. You know that you do not want to turn your children away from God by denying them the opportunity to become a Christian when they are ready. You also know, however, that if the decision is made too early, when the child is not ready, that could potentially be just as detrimental. How old does a child need to be to be a candidate for baptism? When will your child be ready?

In truth, every child is different. There is no magic age like 12 or 13 when a child suddenly graduates into maturity. For some it is sooner, for others it is latter. And, just like there is no magic age, neither is there a mathematical formula you as the parent can apply to be sure that you make the right decision. You are, however, in the best position to know your child.

This book, therefore, is written to help you ask your child some of the vital questions involved in becoming a Christian. There is no substitute for godly parents who are bringing their children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. This book, however, can be a valuable resource that can be used to open up dialog between the parent and child. Written and illustrated in a style that maturing children can understand and appreciate, this book forces its young readers to ask themselves some really tough questions. In the process, it supplies the reader with the crucial biblical knowledge needed to become a child of God.

I'm a Christian, What's Next?

Watching your child be baptized into Christ is one of the most amazing things that a Christian parent can experience this side of eternity. Yet the wise mother or father understands that becoming a Christian is the beginning of a maturing child's Christian journey, certainly not the end. Each new babe in Christ needs nurturing and continued teaching from God's Word. New Christians need to be impressed with their new responsibilities, blessings, and promised rewards. They need to be equipped with the proper spiritual tools to deal with temptation, and to know how to handle it when they do occasionally sin.

It is often the case that parents of new Christians wonder where to start. What aspects of the Christian life need to be addressed first? What Bible stories, facts, and principles will help a young Christian get moving in the proper direction? This book was written to answer some of those very important questions. It is designed to show new Christians God's will about how they should worship, relate to their peers and their parents, and live godly lives. When a young person becomes a Christian, those close to him or her often wonder how they can help the new convert mature in Christ. By putting the babe in Christ in contact with the teachings in this book, a caring family member can help the new Christian respond to the question, "I'm a Christian, What's Next?"
